Is Google Trademark or Synonymous
Google foresees one of the major risks it will be facing and stated in its latest Q-10 statement of Q1 2006. To quote Google’s filing:
“We also face risks associated with our trademarks. For example, there is a risk that the word ‘Google’ could become so commonly used that it becomes synonymous with the word ‘Search’. If this happens, we could lose protection for this trademark, which could result in other people using the word ‘Google’ to refer to their own products, thus diminishing our brand.”
In a 10-Q statement, a company lists all the relevant financial details it is required to report as well as other related information. By the end of every quarter, public companies are required to file the 10-Q statement as a report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Nowadays ‘Google’ has become a common word in many sentences such as below.
“If you want to the answer, why don’t you google it?”
“I’m googling right now.”
I can easily list a few more dozens of similar examples.
