4 Hard Reset Methods to Reset ASUS Router

This article shows you 4 methods to hard reset your ASUS router to factory default settings (or status).

If you do a factory hard reset to your ASUS router, it will be taken back to the initial state when you first purchased the router.

Why do you have to reset your ASUS router to factory default?

One reason is when you are unable to log in to your ASUS router with the default username and password, because previously you may have changed the default username and password to something else.

Method 1: Reset an Asus Router with the Reset Button

Long press the factory-reset button (at the back of your ASUS router) for at least 10 seconds, before releasing the reset button. Usually, you will need to use a ball pen or paper clip for the long press.

You will not have to switch off the power cutoff of your ASUS router.

Now your ASUS router should have been restored to default settings (or status).

While the ethernet cable between your computer and the ASUS router is connected (i.e. plugged into one of the LAN ports of the ASUS router), you can go to the login page’s IP address with a web browser (e.g. Google Chrome), and type in:

192.168.1.1

Log in with the default username and password:

admin (username)
admin (password)

Method 2: Reset ASUS Router with WPS Button

When the reset button does not work to reset your ASUS router to default status, the alternative is to use the WPS button.

WPS button is the WIFI protected setup button.

The method to factory reset the ASUS router using the WPS button:

  • Turn off the ASUS router.
  • Long press and hold the WPS button, and turn on the ASUS router.
  • The power LED light is on. Keep holding the WPS button.
  • When the power LED light starts flashing, release the WPS button.
  • When the power LED light stops flashing, the router will automatically reboot.

This method will work ASUS router models including:

Method 3: Reset ASUS Router with WPS Button and Power Button

We can hard reset ASUS routers using the WPS button and the Power button.

  • Turn off the router.
  • Long press and hold the WPS button, and turn on the router.
  • The power LED light is on. Keep holding the WPS button.
  • When the power LED light is off, release the WPS button.
  • Press the power button to manually reboot the router.

This method will work for ASUS router models including:

GT-AC5300, GT-AX11000, GT-AX11000 (Call of duty 4), RT-AC2900, RT-AC86U, RT-AX88U

Method 4: Reset ASUS Router with WPS Button and Power Button

Again, we can hard reset ASUS routers using the WPS button and the Power button.

  • Turn off the router.
  • Long press and hold the WPS button, and turn on the router.
  • The power LED light is on. Keep holding the WPS button.
  • The power LED light starts flashing for about 5 seconds.
  • Keep holding until the power LED light stops flashing. The ASUS router will automatically reboot.

This method will work for ASUS router models including:

DSL-AC52U, DSL-AC55U, DSL-AC56U, DSL-N12E_C1, DSL-N12U_C1, DSL-N17U, DSL-N55U_C1
